Our first week was mostly paperwork and intro classes to life in the Navy. We had a drug screen, were fitted for our uniforms, learned to drill, had blood drawn, learned how to stand watch, picked collateral duties, did our first PFA and many many many other things that I just can't remember because I am so tired. Mornings are very early at ODS, most days we have to be up, ready, and standing at attention by 4:30 AM. I usually get up at least an hour before muster so that I can get ready and make my bed. This weekend we had liberty within the training grounds and today we have liberty inside the entire base so we can go to the officer club, subway, and the bowling alley if we choose. However we have to wear our kayak uniforms and its raining a lot today so we are debating whether we want to go out or not. Next week will be busy again and we have our first uniform inspection on Friday which I am really nervous about! I need to get everything squared away as soon as possible so I can pass with flying colors.
My feet are killing me and I can't believe how many blisters have formed on my feet since I got here. I think its all the marching, PT, walking, and general activity we do because we do more walking and marching than I have ever done in my life. Be ready for your legs, feet, and back to hurt a lot, especially the first week while you are getting used to all the activity. Even as a nurse who walks a lot my feet and legs are killing me! But I'm glad that I brought lots of blister band-aids because I think I will develop new blisters once I start to wear my dress shoes everywhere. FYI those shoes take FOREVER to shine, so much work. But I've learned several new techniques and I am refining my own technique. The prior enlisted sailors we have in our class our amazing and I am so thankful for them. We would not be doing as well as a company if we didn't have so many awesome priors. Know your priors, they will be your lifesavers!
I don't think that I will have time to update during the week so hopefully I will have some extra free time next weekend to write about my second week at ODS. Until next time! :)
